Great value if you enjoy an old home
This is a marvelous home rental for the money. The rental is probably priced lower for a couple reasons that, for us, actually proved advantageous. First, the fairly basic renovation preserves a lot of old house charm, but has not removed all the old house inconveniences, like doors that stick and windows that don't stay open. Once we found props for all the sashes and resolved the conflict over 3 fans for 4 bedrooms, we were comfortable, both physically and psychologically. We ourselves live in a fussy historic home, painted and decorated with similar taste. Second, the property is a winding 20-minute drive to the big attractions and amenities (e.g., grocery store) in Lunenberg, and Riverport's nothing but a post office and houses. But we still found favorite attractions nearby. Based on our sampling of a few beaches and conversation with other beachgoers, the nearest beach, Hirtle's, may be the best on the south shore! Just beautiful. The most interesting natural attraction on our tour of eastern Canada was the nearby Ovens (better than the Hopewell "Flowerpots"). And while the road and telephone wires mar the view immediately in front of the property, Ritcey's Cove is still a lovely spot. If you have a kayak, just carry across the street and through some high grass at high tide for a convenient, safe paddle on the cove or upper LaHave. Very pleasant and solicitous owners too!
