In July 2016 I rented "THE" ROMANTIC COTTAGE in Big Bear CA to celebrate my husband's birthday. I've happily used VRBO before, but this time didn't go well, primarily due to lack of full disclosure. The location in Big Bear was convenient and nicely shaded from the heat by tall pines. The property looked neatly kept. The rep who met us was polite & helped us settle in. However, at the last minute, he unveiled a nine-page rental agreement containing forbidding & seemingly aggressive and all-inclusive legalese. The gist seemed to be that anything bad that might happen would be on the guest - even vandalism or actions of trespassers. My husband was seriously put off by this unexpected and last-minute event and wished to strike the clause: "GUEST AGREES THAT THIS AGREEMENT SUPERSEDES ALL CALIFORNIA LAW AND TORT LAW IN THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA". The rep wouldn't agree to this, nor would his mother, Debbie (the rental agreement named Debbie Stauffer, a Big Bear realtor with Keller Williams, I think). She offered a refund, but he relented once he realized all the effort I'd already put in to make this celebration happen. I've never heard of anything similar from a VRBO rental and wasn't expecting it. Anyone undressing in the bedroom upstairs was completely in view of the neighbors and the street because the large window had no covering. For me, that's anything but romantic. There's only one bathroom and it's downstairs. The stairway between is quite steep, about 43 degrees, and tricky. Anyone stepping out of the bathroom unclothed is visible from the street due to lack of window coverings near the driveway. The uncovered kitchen window was in plain view of 4 other properties. I don't get how the scarcity of window coverings can be considered romantic. On day 2 we hiked. We returned tired and welcomed the jacuzzi. Perhaps overchlorination is typical? However, the BBQ & outdoor furniture was great for a relaxing dinner. At checkout we noticed that we'd be charged $25 if we didn't take the trash to an in-town location, so we took it with us. Another surprise. All in all, this was a cozy and mostly enjoyable rental that would have been greatly improved if the onerous rental agreement and the restrictions and inaccuracies had been disclosed IN ADVANCE to us before we rented and drove three hours. Update: I can no longer find a description of this property on vrbo.com. It may have been sold. Perhaps caution is advised when dealing with the lessor, Debbie.
