Not the Nicest Place to Stay
The place was difficult to find because it was not well-marked with an easily seen address. We drrove past it about three times trying to find it and figure out where the driveway was located. The smell of air freshener was overwhelming when we first walked in the door. I have a sensitivity to fragrances and had some ear, nose and throat issues due to the overpowering smell of the air freshener. It took us awhile to figure out that it was plugged into an outlet. Once we unplugged it, the smell of mildew permeated the cabin. There was an "ashy smell" from the fireplace. Even opening any windows that could open along with opening the front door could not get rid of the smell of mildew and this smell gave me a headache. The appliances worked (at least the refrigerator and microwave did), but the dishwasher was so old that I questioned its reliability and washed our dishes by hand. For the most part, the dishes in the cabinets were not clean. The furniture was uncomfortable and musty smelling. There were missing light bulbs in lamps. The windows and doors were the worst part. Some of the windows didn't open at all, others barely opened. There was a broken window in one of the bedrooms. The windows that did open had holes in the screens. The paint was peeling in the window sills and there were tons of spider webs and bugs around the windows. The bathroom had mold in the grout between the tiles, but everything else was OK in the bathroom. The boathouse seemed fairly new with new windows and a wood floor. But again there were large holes in the screens so at night, the bugs came in. The padded bench was extremely uncomfortable and there wasn't much of a view because the shoreline was filled with big boulders, cast-off chairs and other junk. The doors were not hanging right from their hinges and we had to goof around with them to get them to close and the back door was difficult to lock. In fact, our key to the back door became stuck in the lock several times to the degree that we had to use pliers to pull it out! I was so disappointed in this place for our vacation!! There was nothing "lovely" about this property. I would have given it zero stars for a rating, but did not have that option so I gave it one star. We ended up leaving a day early and forfeiting the price of a night's stay. I would not recommend this place to a friend or relative. I don't think I would use HomeAway again for booking a vacation rental.
