WARNING - poor communication by owner = $370 towing fee
Even though I called the owner the night we arrived and was concerned if I could park in the lot we were in due to a permit required sign, I was told not to worry about it. It was ok to park there, she said. I assumed they just didn't enforce it. What she didn't tell me was a permit was required and she knew it. I did not see any permit, although later she told me it was hanging under where the keys initially were (hanging in a dark corner ). After getting towed the last night we stayed and paying $370 to get my car out so we could get to the airport early the next morning, I told her the next day what had happened and let her know I expected reimbursement. She said she had emailed me and has consistently refused to pay. When I got home I saw she did email me but not until a day after the rental began and I didn't have email access while on the road or at her place. She could tell I never responded to any of the emails she sent after we left home, especially since I also didn't get the instructions on how to get into the place on the same email and called her about it when we got there. Given we came in at about 10PM and the amount of the towing fee, I would certainly expect at least a mention of the permit upon my inquiry about parking. I've rented via VRBO many times in the past and have never had the owner expect I have email access after the day the rental began. It has always been communication via text, phone or in person. We never did meet the owner, the door was just left unlocked in a big apartment complex -- very unsafe. I also found out the property owners do not allow VRBO rentals. I did notify VRBO of this, as I would not have rented this place if I had known that.
