Poor property, poor service
My husband and I have used Homeaway/VRBO several times over the past couple of years with great success, and enjoyed time with family in great properties, two since June in the Greenville, SC area. This experience, however, was totally different. We originally rented a different property, which turned out to be a decades-old single-wide mobile home that has been somewhat updated, minimally equipped with old furniture, and not adequately cooled, with just a window air-conditioner unit. The ceiling fan in the queen bedroom broke when we attempted to turn it on high to cool the bedroom for occupancy because there was NO air moving in the bedroom, and no screens on the windows. We immediately called the owner as required. She said a room-size unit had not been installed because the window is too large, and suggested my husband go to another unit in the trailer park to bring a unit back. I dismissed that as a possibility, and should have known then that this would not be a good experience. So much for customer service! The owner suggested we move to this unit in the trailer park the next day, with central heat/air, which we agreed was acceptable. However, this unit happened to be one with a 25-plus year old van in the parking space, old deck boards in the yard, and a hollowed-out trailer awaiting rebuilding next door. There are other units in the park that have been torn apart, and debris and remnants of the trailers in the yards. We were stuck, and wanted to try to complete our stay, as our money had been paid, and we did not have a viable alternative at the time. We moved in, and were fine until we flushed the toilet, which made a high-pitched whining sound and began to overflow from the tank. We immediately turned off the valve to prevent any further damage, and texted the owner. Her reply was that we could move back to the original unsatisfactory unit! We declined, and then received a phone call during which the owner indicated that we were too difficult to work with, could obviously not be satisfied, and should leave. We declined, saying we would spend the night, as it was already 8:00 in the evening. She said that she would be back in touch about the financial impact on us regarding the “damages” to the units. We told her we would move out by 8:00 the next morning. We filed a dispute with Visa , who connected us to Homeaway/VRBO, and we filed a complaint. This action is pending, as we have not had communication in 2 days.
