Relax and renew your spirit at our secluded strawbale and natural clay home nestling in 43 acres of giant boulders and Joshua trees, where the stunning 360 degree views stretch from the flora and fauna of the hi-desert to snow capped Mount San Jacinto. Thousands of acres of wilderness are right on your doorstep and from your front porch you can watch desert wildlife flocking to the water we always provide. Think Joshua Tree National Park without the tourists.
THE ROADRUNNER is your private haven away from it all, abutting the newly created Sand to Snow National Monument and thousands of acres of protected wilderness, yet within a short drive of Joshua Tree National Park, the Integraton, Garth's Boulder Gardens, and the 1940s film set of Pioneertown, with its famous honky tonk, Pappy and Harriet's Pioneertown Palace. Our home lies at the foot of Black Lava Butte, now an important part of the new Monument, and is located in much sought after Pipes Canyon, where many of the locals are artists - painters, musicians, composers and writers - including the owner of THE ROADRUNNER, who is happy to offer signed copies of her latest book to guests. All this and yet THE ROADRUNNER lies only 1.5 miles off the blacktop of Pipes Canyon Road and within a couple of hours drive of Los Angeles.
Our strawbale home has many advantages - it's extra fireproof, aesthetically beautiful and superbly insulated, for starters. Because of its strawbale and clay construction, THE ROADRUNNER can keep you comfortable whatever the outside temperature. The walls are 2ft thick and the thermal mass means you don't need air conditioning or a furnace. In the height of summer you may want to use our ceiling fans, and for those crispy winter days there's a cozy woodstove (logs provided free of charge). Natural materials (hand-crafted clay plaster on the walls, Saltillo tiles under your feet) and cathedral ceilings create a feeling of space, simplicity and tranquility, and the 8ft deep wrap-around tiled deck provides year round outdoor dining and sleeping while doubling as a meditation and yoga deck with panoramic views over the desert. With the help of many friends we built the home ourselves, and our photo collection of the construction shows the process from breaking ground to sign off.
There's an extensive library, including special sections on strawbale building and on the history, flora and fauna of the desert, plus DVDs. All our power comes from solar energy (you'll see the panels on the roof of our studio) so if you've always wanted to try living in a house powered entirely by natural means, here's your chance. Your lighting and your kitchen appliances have a minimal carbon footprint, and when you recharge your laptop or cell phone, you're doing so off the grid.
There is a separate bedroom with a queen sized bed and also a full sized day bed/sofa bed in the living room that serves to accommodate a second couple. Please see photo shots of living room to view the sofa/day bed. And if you have a hankering to sleep outside under the stars, we also provide a queen bed on our west facing porch.
Perhaps most important of all, we have HAMMOCKS slung around our porches, so you can sip coffee or wine and swing gently with the breeze as you enjoy our stunning sunrises and sunsets.
Don't want to leave your pet behind while you're on vacation ? If you book your dog in with THE ROADRUNNER in advance, we'll be happy to accommodate man's best friend for a small extra fee. Just ask us when you make your booking ...
And because THE ROADRUNNER and its 43 acres is a private haven which we maintain as a nature reserve, we don't accept large groups, events, or parties. Nor do we permit off-road vehicles, trail bikes, or any vehicle which would disturb the fragile desert flora and fauna.+ More
