We love the ocean, and we love forests, and our home reflects that. It is hard to decide where to look - each room of the house has panoramic, uninterrupted, every-changing views of the water, city, Angel Island, Alcatraz, Bay bridge and Oakland. We also have a beautiful back garden (unusual for Sausalito), with a little grove of native California oak trees, and two decks with views to the city.
Located in the prized "banana belt" of Sausalito - warm and lovely. Many homes in Sausalito are so far up a steep hill, it is difficult to walk anywhere. Ours is close to everything, but still has the views.
Our home is an iconic example of mid century modern architecture, designed by Notable architect Mario Corbett, who was in company with Frank Lloyd Wright and others of the school. It was commissioned in 1948, and it is protected under city ordinance as an example of the architect's work.
From its construction in 1948 until 2015, the home was owned by only one family. Finally, the family reluctantly decided to sell the home. We were fortunate enough to come to own it, and have tried to respect the character of the home and city.
We undertook extensive renovations, but managed to preserve the original floors and walls and many of the features. However, we completely replaced the kitchen, and we developed the outdoor area. We took every single surface of the home back to original condition, and the garden is brand new and still being built.
There are three bedrooms downstairs. Bedroom 1 is the original master with a lovely new state-of-the-art queen bed. Bedroom 2 and 3 are small and adjoining with a sliding door in between them, so this could be one large bedroom at your discretion. Bedroom 2 and 3 has a double futon. Upstairs, we have converted the dining room into a 'bachelor bedroom' with a king bed. There isn't much privacy for this upstairs room, but has a gloriously spectacular bachelor-pad like feel at night, so can be used in different ways, or converted back to a dining room for longer stays.
There is a dining table in the living room (seats 4), bar (seats 3), and outdoor dining set (seats 8) right off the kitchen.
We have stayed at many vacation rentals which claim you have the whole house, but when you arrive, you discover you have half a house and share the yard. This is not the case. This is the whole house and garden to yourself, great for privacy and a blissful escape, with easy access to the city.
