ABOUT OUR NEIGHBORHOOD: Flatbush is a bustling, working-class neighborhood known and loved for its diversity (residents are predominantly Caribbean, African American, and Latino/a), availability of public transit (we have access to three subway lines), and affordability. If you like exploring multicultural neighborhoods that are off the beaten path, you will find a lot here to stimulate you. On the other hand, if you feel uncomfortable in lively city environments, you might not enjoy it here. We find that our Stylish 1BR Retreat is appreciated the most by travelers who like an adventure or have a "been there, done that" attitude toward Manhattan. We are near multiple subway lines (Q, 2, and 5), which will get you almost anywhere you might like to go. But depending on your destination, it takes anywhere from 30 to 75 minutes to travel from our house to Manhattan via subway or bus. You can search CityMapper (a great website/app for transportation guidance) for commute times to NYC destinations from our nearest subway stops: Beverly Rd (2 and 5 trains) and Beverley Rd (Q train). Or, message us with your questions! We always give honest door-to-door estimates -- not just the time you'll spend on the train.
=== A 1912 TOWNHOUSE in AUTHENTIC BROOKLYN ===
This stylish urban retreat occupies the basement level of a 100-year-old brick townhouse owned and occupied by your hosts -- two professors at Brooklyn College (CUNY), a university that is located in the neighborhood. Our basement suite offers privacy, proximity to subways, and amazing amenities within walking distance (dining, bars, boutiques, markets, parks). It has its own entrance from the front yard and has a living room with sofa bed, a bedroom with queen bed, an office nook, a fully stocked kitchenette, a washer and dryer for your exclusive use, and a private backyard with patio and charcoal grill.
The LIVING ROOM features:
--> exposed brick, recessed lighting, mid-century modern decor
--> CB2 "Flex" sofa bed
--> office nook with laser printer (bring your laptop)
--> 55-inch flatscreen Internet-based Smart TV equipped with Netflix, Hulu, and other free streaming services
--> DVD player and our small library of films and musicals
--> our expansive collection of sci-fi novels, historical fiction, and travel/language books
--> WIFI throughout the apartment
The newly renovated KITCHENETTE with LAUNDRY includes:
--> undercounter refrigerator with freezer compartment
--> 2-burner electric cooktop
--> 12-cup coffeemaker
--> all cooking equipment and essentials (spices, olive oil, vinegar)
--> petite dining area (seats 2)
--> compact Electrolux washer with steam
--> full-sized LG gas dryer with steam
BEDROOM features a super-firm queen bed with 600 thread-count sheets, full closet, plenty of shelves to store your stuff, and (in the summer) an air-conditioner. If you leave the bedroom door open, the air conditioner can cool the living room as well.
BATHROOM features a tiled shower, a showerhead with five comfort settings, and white bath linens.
BACKYARD with patio, a table that seats four, and a Weber charcoal grill!
Our Stylish 1BR Retreat is designed to give you privacy and independence during your stay. We live in the townhouse full time, right upstairs on the first floor with our dog Mabel, so we're always available if you have questions. Because it is an old house, you will hear us and our dog from time to time, but we are working professionals with a quiet lifestyle. We look forward to welcoming you to our unique corner of Brooklyn!
=== OTHER THINGS to NOTE ===
We want you to be comfortable and to have a great time! So, in case it matters to you, we think you should know:
--> This is a basement suite. This means that the backyard and washer/dryer are yours to enjoy exclusively, but there are small windows in the bedroom and kitchenette only. To provide light and ventilation to the living room, we have installed a full-view glass storm door with a retractable insect screen at the basement entrance. Also, if you are tall, you will have to watch your head at times -- the ceilings in the suite range from 7 to 8 feet high (2.1-2.4 meters).
--> Please note our house is located next to an auto-repair shop (typically open Mon-Sat 9am-7pm). Our block is an eclectic mix of businesses, century-old townhouses, and apartment buildings -- authentic Brooklyn.
--> The kitchenette does not have an oven or dishwasher, but it does have almost everything else (cooktop, microwave, etc.) Plus, there is a charcoal grill/barbecue in the backyard!
=== EASY ACCESS to 3 SUBWAY LINES ===
From our townhouse, it is a short walk to the 2 or 5 at Beverly Rd (7 minutes) and the Q at Beverley Rd (12 minutes). These trains will take you to all five boroughs, including Manhattan. For example, it is less than one hour to Madison Square Garden/Penn Station (45 minutes) and Times Square (50 minutes).
=== FLATBUSH, BROOKLYN: "A FIT FOR MANY TASTES AND BUDGETS" ===
A bustling and diverse neighborhood populated by working families, Flatbush was recently highlighted by The New York Times as one of Brooklyn's up-and-coming areas: "Flatbush, Brooklyn, a Fit for Many Tastes and Budgets," 16 May 2015. We chose to make Flatbush our home because of its casual atmosphere, friendly neighbors, and proximity to trendy Cortelyou Road, which offers a plethora of restaurants, bars, cafes, and other amenities. Residents commute to Manhattan by subway or express bus. The neighborhood is bounded by Ditmas Park (west), Midwood (south), Lefferts-Gardens (north), and East Flatbush.
In 15 minutes or less, you can walk to:
--> Dozens of restaurants, bars, and cafes
--> A huge supermarket (5-minute walk) and two organic grocery stores (15-minute walk)
--> A farmer's market on Sundays
--> A yoga studio with massage and acupuncture practitioners on site
--> The spectacularly restored Kings Theatre (rock, jazz, reggae, theater, more)
--> Three gyms (Planet Fitness, 24-Hour Fitness, Retro Fitness)
--> Two outlet stores (Gap, Old Navy)
--> Brooklyn's landmarked art-deco Sears
--> Prospect Park, Brooklyn's version of Central Park (20-minute walk)
--> Smorgasburg, the celebrated weekly food festival featuring NYC's best artisanal vendors (in Prospect Park on Sundays during warm months)
Also, FORT GREENE is just 25 MINUTES BY SUBWAY. This fashionable Brooklyn neighborhood rivals Manhattan with its vibrant arts, entertainment, and dining scene. It is home to several theater, opera, and dance companies (Brooklyn Academy of Music, Mark Morris Dance Group, Polansky Shakespeare Center); a cinema offering first-run and art films (BAM Rose Cinemas); and a stadium where you can attend sports events, concerts, and other spectacles (Barclays Center). We spend a lot of our free time in Fort Greene!
