We live in a unique, stone-walled "hobbit castle" house in North Berkeley that we make available for rent when we're out of town.
It's a cute 3 bedroom house, situated at the very base of the Berkeley Hills, just a couple blocks from the "Gourmet Ghetto", Solano Avenue, Live Oak Park and the Berkeley Rose Garden.
Cool trivia: One of the members of the band Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR) used to own and live in this house.
Two floors, 1450 sq feet
Two bathrooms, one with bathtub/shower (upstairs), one with shower (downstairs)
Spacious living room with stone fireplace.
Master bedroom with vaulted ceilings with exposed wood beams and its own stone fireplace. California King sized bed.
One bedroom with a twin bed. This is our daughter's room. The bed trundles out into a separate twin bed if desired.
Guest room/gym room/play room - There is a comfortable fold out sofa bed (full size) in this room. Actually comfortable - not the kind with springs that break your back - and we have a memory foam topper if you prefer softer.
We do not have a TV but do have cable high speed internet and wifi. We watch shows and movies on our laptops.
Dining room with 6 chairs plus two extra fold out chairs in the laundry room.
Fully equipped kitchen w/ dishwasher. We will make space in the food cabinets and you are welcome to use any of things that make no sense for you to have to bring (spices, oils, etc.). Gas stove/oven are very old but work great.
Laundry room with 3 year old stackable LG washer and dryer.
Lovely, recently renovated backyard with two spacious decks, table, chairs and umbrella for outdoor meals, rooftop vegetable garden and HOT TUB!
One of the unique features of our house is fish tank built into wall between the kitchen and the living room. Can be enjoyed from either side. The fish require minimal care and we have a guy come every few weeks for tank maintenance. While we're away we drop week-long feeder tablets into the tank and just ask our renters to drop a new one in every weekend. If the tank cleaner guy comes he does it so you may not even have to do that.
The house can comfortably sleep up to five (if two share the Cal-king bed, two share the full/queen bed) plus one more adult on a single bed. Or you could even have two kids on two single beds if the trundle is opened, for a total of 6 individuals.
If you need to accommodate another individual or couple there is an additional stand-alone unit attached to the home that we also rent out. Think of it as an in-law but without a kitchen. See our other listing to view photos of that unit. There's a soundproofed double wall between the house and that unit, so neither side is usually aware of the other.
PLEASE NOTE THAT YOU WILL BE SHARING THE HOUSE WITH OUR CAT. He's amazingly adorable and everyone who ever stays here falls in love with him. He has always been pretty much independent and we have often left him alone over the years with enough food and water for up to ten days. Even when we're home we just fill up the food tray and water bowls once or twice a week and he grazes whenever he wants. He has traditionally required no work except to let him in and out of the house occasionally, but now that he's getting old he needs to have fluids administered once every two or three days. We pay a wonderful woman named Patty to come in and do that when we're out of town, so you won't have to. She has her own key and knows to coordinate the timing of her visits so as not to inconvenience our guests. He also needs an antacid pill daily. Before we leave I'll stick a bunch of pills into tiny balls of chicken so all you have to do is hand it to him, which he will love you for! The last guests said it was actually fun to give those to him. He also loves to cuddle up at night (usually with our daughter in her room) so a cat lover is a must!!!
Our cleaning person will come just before you arrive so the house will be in great shape for you.
5 minute walk to amazing cafes restaurants and groceries stores.
10-15 minute walk from Central and North Berkeley BART stations.
