We chose to locate in the Red Hook / Rhinebeck area, both are about 20 minutes away, because of the proximity to so many interesting small towns with great restaurants conveniently located in any direction that one wishes to go. The Taconic Parkway entrance which could take you to NYC is only 3/4 a mile from the house. Should you need a meal close by, The Stissing House in Pine Plains, built in the late 1800's, is perhaps the best restaurant in the area serving both lunch and dinner on weekends. It is only 10 minutes away. And one should not miss dining at The Culinary Institute in Hyde Park that is approximately a 30 minute drive. You must make reservations before coming to the area in order to get a table. While in Hyde Park you might like to see some historical sights. Both the Roosevelt and Vanderbilt mansions are in Hyde Park. Other mansions to see, if starting from the Red Hook area, are Mills Mansion in Staatsburg; Wildenstein in Rhinebeck; Samuel Morse, who invented the Morse code in Poughkeepsie; and the Fisher Performing Arts Center at Bard College. Both children and adults will enjoy the Rhinebeck Aerodrome featuring old airplanes that actually still fly. If you like hiking, Poet's Walk is only 15 minutes away. At the end of your walk you will be at the Hudson River. Or you can climb Stissing Mountain in Pine Plains or walk around Thompson Pond instead of climbing the mountain.
If you love searching for the perfect antique, Hudson is the town to explore, about 20 minutes away. In the summer, Grieg farm has picking times to enjoy strawberries and other fruits. The Millbrook Winery has a tasting room which offers lunch and dinner and can certainly delight your palette. And across the street from the house is the Roejan Creek. If you brought a fishing pole, you can spend many hours fishing along the edge of the water across our street. In the summer Wilcox Park on 199 has a pool with a sandy beach and the Taghkanic State Park off the Taconic Parkway has a beautiful lake to swim in with a picnic area. In the winter skiing is available at Catamount Mountain which is about 30 minutes away. Further north are other ski resorts.
