Located at the Silverlake/Toutle border on Spirit Lake Highway, this awesome property enjoys a commanding view of snow-covered Mt. St. Helens. Just 9&1/2 miles up Highway 504 from Castle Rock, we are a 45 minute drive to the lava dome at Mt. St. Helens. Each of the Visitors' Centers on Spirit Lake Highway has it's own "story-to-tell" about the 1980 blast that forever changed the landscape of our mountain. Plan on spending an entire day just "doing the mountain". You'll be an expert "volcanologist" after that, and can share your excitement about Mt. St. Helens with others.
From the Great Room of the Lodge, you'll have a clear view of "Elk Meadows" and may see our herd of 40 elk who visit us from time-to-time from about February through July of each year. You'll also enjoy seeing the "Oreo Cows" next-door - a herd of Galloway Belties from the Netherlands. They graze quietly in their pasture year-round and have several new calves each spring or summer. Fun to watch those little guys "boinging around" after their Mamas...
Towards the left from the vantage point of the Great Room, you can see the snow-covered top of Mt. St. Helens nestled in the Cascades, beckoning you to "come explore!"
Our comfy Queen-size bed will feel wonderful after a day of exploring the mountain. The sofa in the Great Room sleeps 1 more person, so three, maximum, is what we recommend for your comfort and convenience.
Our galley-style shared commercial kitchen has plenty of features (electric stove top and oven, microwave, dishwasher, coffee maker, toaster, fridge with freezer, triple sink and butterfly sink), for those who enjoy cooking IN, and great restaurants like Parkers' Steak House and El Compadre Mexican Restaurant and Pepers' 49-er are just a short drive away (about 15 minutes), for those who prefer dining OUT!
If you enjoy playing piano, there is a 100+ year-old upright grand piano in the great room that "has seen better days" (it's been through a fire and a flood in it's previous location), but it SOUNDS GOOD when you tickle it's ivories. If reading is your "cup-of-tea", our well-stocked library will keep you busy.
If you enjoy TV, we have a 60" flatscreen with DirecTV "sports package" so you can watch your favorite shows. (Seahawks, anyone???) We also have a DVD player and lots of movies you can watch, if TV shows "aren't your thing". Our DVDs are family-friendly, so your kids will be safe here.
We also have several board games for kids and teens to "keep them off the streets and out of trouble". And there is always the local swimming hole at Harry Gardner Park in Toutle, which is about a five-minute drive from Volcano View Lodge. There, you'll find volleyball nets, public restrooms, picnic tables and firepits, swings and a playground, and the Toutle River sandy banks for many happy hours of swimming and fun. Pets must be kept on leash there, but can join in the fun in the river on hot days.
Speaking of pets, if you bring your pet, we provide a large kennel in the Lodge so you can keep your pet safe if you cannot bring him/her on every little errand. If you're going to be away for several hours, though, we recommend you bring your pet with you, of course.
The Lodge is air-conditioned in summer and heated in winter, so comfortable, year-round. The large brick court-yard out front is an ideal place for your BBQ or picnic in the spring & summer months, and a fine place for an "Octoberfest" celebration in the fall. There is a portable "fire-pit" on casters, for s'mores and cook-outs in the court-yard, as well as a large picnic table that seats 8.
On the back patio (outside the Great Room) there is a cozy "table for two". A great place to start the day with coffee and wild-life viewing - or to wind down after a busy day of exploring the mountain or The Ape Caves!
Your hosts live on-site. Steve & Paddy have one small dog (Tucker) and one large cat (Patches) who will be sharing the common areas with you. (Great room, dining area, kitchen and library).+ More
