Property Description

Waipi'o Hostel is located in the quaint village of Kukuihaele, less than a mile from majestic Waipiʻo Valley. In a place where horses and wild turkeys often wander by, this is the old Hawaiʻi. A place where neighbors are welcoming and life is sweet as the smell of sugar cane grass. You'll enjoy the wonderful ocean view and many fruit and macadamia nut trees on the property. We enjoy the best weather on the island- not hot like Kona, not rainy like Hilo, not cold like Waimea… just perfect!! It's also a central location for exploring the Hilo and Kona sides of the island. Just 10 minutes away is the lovely town of Honokaʻa, with farmers markets, antique shops, restaurants, and the coolest old movie theater in the world.

Our three guest rooms are called "hostel style" but are really private rooms below the main home. The rooms are simple, yet nicely decorated, clean, with great beds. Guests share a bathroom, outdoor patio and living room with high speed Wi-Fi, couches, cable TV, microwave, coffee maker, refrigerator, and gas grill. We are a "green" facility which is cleaned and laundered with non-toxic cleaning products. Guests may also pick ripe fruit from the yard. We usually have all the fruit you can eat! (Tangerines, macadamia nuts, guava, avocados, bananas…) We also have a flock of hens with enough fresh eggs to share. Our guests tend to be excellent company, usually visiting from Europe, the US Mainland, Asia, Australia and beyond.

The Waipʻo Hostel Lehua Room is a cute room with two single beds. Itʻs also equipped with a sink with hot and cold water. The house itself is an authentic “plantation home" built in 1922 and oozing with character. These walls have stories to tell! My wife and I live upstairs with our 3 children as your hosts. So the disclaimer is: if you are not looking for total quiet and enjoy interacting with other travelers in the simple beauty of the Hamakua Coast, this is your place.

We run an outdoor education program for teenagers (Hawaii Outdoors Institute) and are very knowledgeable about hiking in Waipi'o, Waimanu and other outdoor adventures. Many people use the hostel as a launching point for hiking trips. Ask us about camping equipment rental if you need. We have everything!

*Due to the nature of the hostel business, we reserve the right to assign an alternate room of equal quality in the event the requested room is not available. We also offer the "Aina Room" and "Lehua Room."

Our guests give us excellent reviews:

"Before coming to the Waipiʻo Hostel, I stayed at the Marriott and at a private resort, and let me tell you... I had the best time here the most!!! I enjoyed visits from wild turkeys and the world's most affectionate cat. I enjoyed the ocean view, the flowers and all the fruit I could sink my teeth into, and most of all, the hospitality extended by Greg and Harmony. They made sure we were comfortable and felt at home. We had a wonderful experience."

"This was a really fantastic place to stay. We were greeted by Greg and his family who live upstairs. They made sure we felt welcome and had everything we needed. The other guests in the hostel were really lovely too. A bonus of staying here was the abundant fruit trees - macadamias, guavas, bananas, avocados, which were all delicious. The place is beautiful too - a short (but steep) hike down into the valley allows you to either go to the beach, or view a fantastic waterfall if you head off in the other direction. Overall it was a fantastic stay, but it was the people there that really made it memorable. We wished we could have stayed longer."

Nice Hostel

Many hostels have shared rooms and bunk beds. Here you will get your own private room. It is really close to Waipilo Valley and is beautiful location for running and walking. It IS far from town so you really do need a car to stay here! However, several cafes and the Cookhouse up the street has EXCELLENT food.

Love staying with Greg and his family. This was my third time!

I like this place, obviously. Nice meeting other travelers and sharing stories and a bottle of wine. Love the shower and am planning a similar setup at my next home. It was nice to be able to have fresh eggs From the chickens on the property. A great place to stay before/after a trip to Waipi'o and Waimanu. Mahalo!
