ABOUT WITTEN POND
'Witten Pond' is comprised of three homes on a 15-acre owner-estate, which is in the midst of the 'forever wild' Catskill State Forest Preserve in the NYC Ashokan Reservoir area and on the protected Wittenberg Stream. Our homes are best suited for one couple, or a couple with a small child and/or pet. All three of our homes have 1-bedroom and 1-bath. We do not suggest that multiple couples inquire for availability for just one home. We recommend if two couples wish to vacation together that they consider renting Lily-of-the-Valley (# 3467416). A special package price will be offered.
The original home, circa 1910 recently restored 'Lily of the Valley,' is furnished in art and antiques. The second is a more contemporary historic home, 'Witten Gatehouse', with a spa bathroom. The third home, 'Witten Barn,' is an architectural integration of old and new including a major European-style kitchen, bathroom, and wood-fired radiant fireplace. 'Witten Pond' homes singly, or together, provide perfect Private Realms for a couple’s getaway.
THE WITTENBERG STREAM: A SMALL BIT OF WITTEN POND HISTORY
A “must” when visiting Witten Pond is to take a short walk up Moonhaw Road to the bridge and dead end. Beginning at Witten Pond, Moonhaw Road is a single dirt lane unchanged in 100 years! Along the way, you walk in parallel with the Wittenberg Stream, which has stayed as pristine as in the days of the Hudson River School painters and naturalist John Burroughs. Wittenberg Stream's rushing waters, which you hear from all the homes at Witten Pond, flows down from Wittenberg Mountain en route to New York City’s Ashokan Reservoir. For those who fish and have a New York State License, the Wittenberg Stream has native brook trout. You can see Wittenberg Mountain's peak from Witten Pond, given it is the third highest vertical climb in the Catskills and a part of the Slide Mountain Wilderness Range.
ABOUT WITTEN BARN
WITTEN BARN is a stand-alone home looking out through large picture windows, fronting on Witten Pond. It has light on three sides and shares a common wall with Moonhaw Gallery to the east, which fronts on Moonhaw Road. Moonhaw Gallery is the owner's private art gallery and office (not open to the public). Witten Barn (red door entrance) and Moonhaw Gallery (green door entrance) each have separate front entrances, which assure privacy for those occupying Witten Barn. On the south side of Witten Pond sits the historic Lily-of-the-Valley and Witten Gatehouse.
Witten Pond is at the end of a one-lane Town road, infrequently travelled. It is surrounded by thousands of acres of the “forever wild” Catskill State Forest Preserve and in an area monitored by NYC to protect the Ashokan Reservoir. Private and public hiking trails abound. The Pond is spring-fed and rainbow trout are available for catch and release fishing as well as swimming at your own risk (no life guard)
The views from Witten Barn overlook Witten Pond to the south and Cornell and Wittenberg Mountains (among the highest in the Catskills) to the North. Witten Pond is in Moonhaw Valley, one of those rare but accessible Catskill Valleys where there is no ambient light from a village or town, which astronomers know as “dark sky” so sky and stars are viewed crystal clear.
Witten Barn has a spacious European-style living area on the first floor with a hand-built, Tuscan wood -burning radiant fireplace also in the European Alps style. This living area reflects American artisanal and modern furnishings, Hudson Valley fine art as well as a European flavor to many of its appointments.
The kitchen is wonderful for those who love the art of cooking and is beautifully equipped and spacious as is the dining area with seating for 8.
The master bedroom and spa suite on the 2nd floor have a hand-crafted large bluestone soaking tub and steam bath, which overlooks Witten Pond. The space is designed for comfort and luxury. The sumptuous 725 sq ft. bedroom suite has cathedral ceilings and the views from this level are stunning.
Witten Barn, circa 1835, was totally renovated in 2000-2005.
Witten Barn is a property that is perfect for the couple or individual who wants luxury, design, peace and inspiration, while being situated in a mountain paradise that is a relatively short drive from Woodstock and other mid-Hudson Valley places of interest.
