The area in and around Bala has long been associated with classic Ontario cottage country vacations, and this popularity continues to grow. The beautiful landscapes, sparkling waters, windswept pines and picturesque cottages speak to today's demanding rental market as well as to the days of yore when the railway introduced many Ontarians to the north.
Hidden away a very short and convenient drive to the town is Bastedo Lake. Motorless by mutual agreement of the lucky few who own cottages on the lake, it is a small and peaceful lake, perfect for a paddle or a swim, trying your luck with a fishing pole, or just lazing away on the dock in the afternoon sun.
Zoe's playground is a newly constructed cottage that takes advantage of the forested landscape and provides a wonderful retreat offering both sun and shade. The deck overlooks the waterfront and will be a spot that your group will no doubt enjoy - from your morning coffee to evening sunset. You will of course be tempted to relax on the deck all day (and we won't tell anyone if that's exactly what you decide to do), but we expect you'll want to enjoy the rest of the property as well. As is the case with many inland lakes, swimming can be a little weedy near the shore, so we recommend taking a dip from the end of the dock.
When you go inside, you will be staying in a cottage that our grandparents would NOT have been familiar with. Fully modern and updated inside, the cottage has a marvellous kitchen complete with all the amenities including a dishwasher and an island boasting seating and a gas cook top. A double size fridge keeps those BBQ meals fresh until they are ready to go on the grill, and a windowside table provides seating for 4-5 while the island sits the rest of the group. You may want to take the meal outside and enjoy it on the deck of course.
The living room is sure to impress, with a double height ceiling, elegant stonework, a large screen satellite TV and a wood stove in case you are there for a cool-season getaway or a summer night gets cool. There is a den/media room on the main floor as well, with a large sectional couch that can double as sleeping accommodation or seating for the group around another large screen TV. A laundry room and a 4-piece bathroom round out the lower level.
Upstairs you will find two nicely appointed bedrooms and a fabulous 3-piece bathroom, complete with designer sink and skylit shower. There is additional sleeping available in the bunkie, with a fold out futon and small kitchen available for one or two people who would like to experience cottaging in what was at one time, and for many years, the only building on the property.
We probably don't have to tell you much about the Bala and Gravenhurst areas. They offer dining, shopping, and browsing in a quaint cottage town environment, with pretty streets and waterfront views all over. We recommend enjoying some pastries or ice cream in Bala at least once during your stay.
Zoe loves it here - and so will your 4-legged friend - a fenced-in area is perfect for keeping canine members of the family from exploring too far afield while at the same time giving them space to enjoy the cottage outdoors as much as you will!+ More
